City Council Meeting on Moratorium for Marigold Dairy apartments

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedin

These are the notes of a city council meeting I, with several citizens of the neighborhood attended. The meeting was arranged to discuss the planned apartment complex at 900 s 400 in Orem. It will occupy the property that was previously owned by the Marigold dairy. I apologize for the lateness of the notes. I thought these notes were lost due to technical difficulties, but I found them. Any misinformation is the fault of the note taker. This is a submission to caucus corner.

The names listed below are council members.

  • Steve said there is a president for law of a moratorium. Utah subprime court on public interest can be cause of an amendment.
  • McDonald to Steve (city employee?). He wanted clarification of when an application is filled out. Complete or incomplete, the city has conditions (building evaluation, lighting plan, traffic, and sewer. With every application, there is a significant staff review. There are always corrections need to be made.
  • If the application is in, adjustment to residential area and community meeting needs to be arranged.
  • Builder: since the zone was designated for residential and business, the felt that a neighborhood meeting was not required. Does not separate a property line. Land owned by city.
  • The Mayor said that the artic district zone allows commercial and residential. Primary residential. Residential should be permitted for second and higher floors. Ease the burden of living areas. The business has been working on last 3 yrs. with the city council.
  • Terri: has concerns of traffic, water usage,
  • A concern was expressed about the close proximity of people in apartments could contribute to the spread of corvid. Apartments are not cheaper.
  • Jeff: shows a lot for citizens give feedback. I said I would listen to you. That is my intention. Got a call from a concerned citizen. His concern as we navigate the growth challenges. If there is not enough housing. Fewer homes are purchased. More homes become rentals. Quality of neighborhoods drops with the rental of homes. Families prefer to buy homes rather than rent.
  • He looked at master plan for State Street. Looked at north village. Each zone is different. Each has unique applications. See what would be beneficial to neighborhoods and businesses and define code to place that is a good compromise.
  • Judy? She has mixed feelings. Does not feel water, and traffic will harm the public interest. Don’t feel arts district should be in a moratorium.
  • Mayor: we have stopped a lot of high-density apartment. We made many improvements in Orem without raising tax. Ore police, fire trucks, and parks. Only raise tax to hire four police officers. Want to put apartments on the main thoroughfare and leave neighborhood untouched. Important we keep height right and parking right. Orem city might end up paying 300 K on a lawsuit. Purchased seven new police cars.

Spelling Preserver

Bad: presarvere

Good: preserver

I just noticed that the word ‘serve’ in in preSERVEr.  So to remember the spelling if you preserver with consistent action, you will usually SERVE your objective with success.

This was from a church talk. Any misinformation is the fault of the note taker.

  • Eighth article of faith: believe the bible to be the word of god as for as it is translated correctly. We also believe the b of m to be the word of God
  • The Book of Mormon is the keystone of our religion.
  • President Ezertaft Benson: speak about significant world has I modern times more important than any inventions of technological age. This is a greater value to mankind than median. Better then space travel. The gift is the Book of Mormon.
  • The D&C says the Book of Mormon is true and it contains the truth of God’s words. Translated from power on high.
  • It contains the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
  • Power in the book will flow into our lives, as your life will be able to have power to avoid deception. Ezertaft Benson.
  • We have the scriptures of the old and New Testament. The Doctrine and Covenants and Pearl of great Price all play a part in our understanding of the gospel.
  • We also have modern revelation from living prophets.
  • D&C 68:4 when man of god speaks under the power of the Holy Ghost, their words shall be scriptures. Power of god unto salvation.

Ranked Choice Voting

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedin

Got an email for Zoom training for ranked choice voting. It is geared for candidates, but I listened in anyway. The trainer was Grace Ramsey co-directory, democracy rising. Any misinformation is the fault of the note taker. This is a submission to caucus corner.

  • Candidates want to build a winning coalition for their voters and supporters.
  • When you change the rules of elections, you change the lives of citizens.

Ranked choice voting 101:

  • In 2018, Utah house bill 35 was signed into law. It allows municipal elections to use ranked choice voting.
  • Vineyard and Payson, of Utah, were the first cities to participate in the pilot program
  • In 2021, 23 cities will take part in the pilot program.
  • The state of Main was the first who used ranked choice voting in 2016
  • Ranked of choice voting rank candidate by preference.
  • A candidate needs to obtain 50% of the vote to win.
  • First choice is the one you want the most.
  • Second choice is whom you want if your first choice is eliminated.
  • Third choice is whom you want if your second choice does not win and your second choice is eliminated.
  • After the first vote, the candidate that is lowest in votes is removed from the list. For those voters who had their first vote for that failed candidate, their next votes will be moved to the candidate of their second choice. That will move the remaining candidate numbers up in volume.
  • The process is repeated until one of the reaming candidates still in the running obtains 50% of the vote, the majority.
  • Q: How many candidates do I rank? They can vote for as many candidates on the ballot. Voters rank by preference of whom they want first.
  • Candidates are the frontline of voter education
  • org web site provided by Lt. governor
  • The same ballot is run to select a voter’s second preferred candidate. The same voting card is used again for their second choice etc.
  • Voting blunders:
  • Ranking your vote: if you count all your votes for the same person as 1st, 2nt, 3rd and your first choice is eliminated, your 2-4 votes are dropped/wasted.
  • Q: Does it hurt my favorite candidate to rank their competitors in my second, third etc. choice? No
  • Voting for all candidates as first choice will reject your ballot.

Editing Suggestions on Seven Texts

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedin

There was a webinar hosted by Write4Kids where two editors reviews seven manuscripts and gave suggests. Any misinformation is the fault of the note taker. The two editors are Bonnie Johnson and Laura Backas (host)

Text:

  • Story (plot line things that need foreshadowing.
  • Screen edit (make sure it’s pulling its weight. feels like a little story by itself, start, middle and end. How you are expressing in actions, dialog and emotional impact.
  • Sentence level language tell story beautifully.
  • Each editing stage requires a separate mindset.

Picture book:

  • Story level fix passive characters that don’t make decisions in the plot. So scenes don’t carry weight in the story. The protagonist is not taking charge. Suggestion: write the story completely from the child’s perspective.
  • Opening needs a lot of work. Typical day, a typical is very vague. There is no strong visual image. Does not tell the reader anything. It could be deleted.
  • Look for sentences where the characters are not doing anything. At the start of the story, give the character some action. (Maybe child and dog are playing. the child says, “you’ve jumped four feet that is the highest you’ve jumped ever.” an action could show what type of the character he or she is. start the scene with him interacting with the dog.
  • Look for unnecessary telling. Such as telling what is happening and then shows same activity.
  • The mound of hair is mentioned twice. In a picture book, you don’t need words on the page that the illustration will tell.
  • Picture book needs to leave room for the picture.
  • Protagonist needs to face the problem. He is stuck in the ball of fur.
  • Story has some great visual potential here.
  • See how problem will evolve.
  • Words lay the foundation of the plot; thoughts give how a character feels
  • But the picture will show visual humor.
  • Don’t need words to tell the visual. Only do words that can’t be drawn.

Middle grade:

  • Cool setting
  • See what sentences can be broken up.
  • If you have, a lot of actins maybe break into several paragraphs so readers can have time to digest events.
  • There is some unnecessary telling.
  • Sentences are strong and vivid.
  • The stakes are high.
  • Could feel character’s emotions.

Rhyming Picture books.

  • Liked the concept that the child’s shoes are the source of the child’s imagination.
  • Opening had a different rhythm and meter in the first stanza and it changes on the others.
  • If keep first stanza have it match the others or have it different to show it’s an intro.
  • Need to have rhymes and meter consistent.
  • Make sure the text stays in the character’s voice.
  • Be aware you stay constituent in rhyming and pattern
  • Have the whole story is in the character’s perspective.
  • External actions such as the mother may come from the artists’ notes.
  • In this PB, the artist notes are not needed.

Middle grade:

  • Texts says middle ray but actions of kids sounds like a teen
  • This text describes the same character in multiple ways. Maybe the protagonist can give the other person blond hair of just give the name or a nickname.
  • We don’t get any internal dialog here.
  • If Swifty (name of character) wanted a dog, you could expand that to a memory of asking his parents.
  • As he sweeps the floors, he can look at the dogs and have him think of the dogs and that lets us understand Swifty more.
  • You could add some sensory details.
  • Middle grade can be up to 10-14 upper middle grades.

Picture book biography:

  • The use of language to create rhythms works well. The language creates motion.
  • There are some nice auditory details.
  • The ending sentence is very abstract. Have the last line have the protagonist do something.
  • Some of the words sound more adult than child.
  • Fist two sentences are quite long. Maybe break them up.

Chapter book or young middle grade.

  • 7-10 is the common age for chapter books.
  • Great passage. There are some powerful verbs.
  • It feels very dynamic. Great pacing.
  • Some of the scene is confusing visually.
  • Some sentences are more complex than the others. May not want to put a metaphor sentence in the middle of an action scene. Maybe replace metaphor line with action.

Middle grade biographical collection:

  • Enjoyed the piece.
  • Good job in picking interesting facts.
  • If put in modern commentary to historical text maybe put them in () or to be consistent to have the whole text be casual. The formal and unformal kind of loses its potential
  • Consider sidebar that provide more straightforward facts in the text and have the lighter tone in the main texts.

Q: what warnings do you have on internal dialog?

  • Thinks something and then says the same thing out loud.
  • Best use of internal dialog to highlight somethings that is learned no other way. It may show a contrast to the scene.
  • Be careful of having a character saying something obvious. If readers are having the same thoughts, don’t have the character say it.

Q: Some authors don’t share name or gender until scenes later in the story.

  • Need to find a way to bring it in. Another character could say “hey girl”. The character could do a behavior that might be identified a feminine.
  • If you write for middle grade or chapter book, you don’t want a reader to be confused. They’ll put the book down.

Q: Suggestions on picking names:

  • Words have resonance.
  • Sound can convey personality. The name may help identify the character’s personality.
  • Read a name out loud and see how difficult it is to pronounce.

Q: How do you feel about past tense?

  • It is more intrusive and ‘was’ is more turn-out-able.
  • Use past tense if you don’t want the character to be intrusive.
  • Picture books can be past or present tense. The story needs to be unfolding in the reader’s eyes.
