Mental Health Benefits of Attending Church for Seniors

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedin

Daisy Jones contacted me and volunteered to present an article on my Tuesday blog. I find this to be a very good article and I hope you will enjoy it as well.

Mental health benefits of attending church for seniors

Attending church offers numerous spiritual benefits for the elderly and younger people alike. Recent studies indicate additional health benefits for seniors. Guest author Daisy Jones explains why attending church could promote your well-being in your senior years.

Promotes mindfulness and an integrated sense of life

Church offers a platform for one to reflect on life. Attending church can give you a deeper sense of gratitude and reverence. It is a place of quiet, peace, and calm that grounds you while offering you respite from the stresses and hassles of life. Even when faced with challenging times, going to church can help you find the lessons in the trials.

In the Christian worldview, life is more than the physical and material; there is a greater purpose for your life. The church teaches forgiveness which is essential in helping you let go of life’s frustration and disappointments. You realize you are a loved human being and embrace your life as a gift from God that you should take care of and enjoy.

Helps in recovery

Attending church is a wonderful way to spend time in the present moment and be grateful for all of the gifts we have in life, especially when we’re going through something as difficult as addiction recovery.

Bible philosophies help to ground you on your recovery journey.  Many people who have successfully recovered from addiction have used prayer to help them overcome their demons. In the 12 steps of recovery, adherents believe that a power greater than themselves will help them restore their sanity. Christianity reminds you to surrender and rely on God’s grace and guidance for restoration.

Helps to fight depression among seniors

While one can get depression at any age, there is a high risk for depression among the elderly which has been attributed to the isolated lifestyle among many seniors. Attending church provides you with a community to belong to. You get to engage with different people who can refresh your perspective on life. You meet kind people who share your beliefs in whom you can confide when facing challenges. Engaging in church activities such as weekly Bible studies or volunteering fills up your time and gives you a sense of purpose, which minimizes the amount of time you spend alone.

Provides an opportunity for you to be active

Your mobility and energy levels may decrease in your senior years. You tend to spend more time seated or lying down. Joining a church that is nearby will offer you an opportunity to walk and stretch. Walking even a half a mile to and from church could give you the momentum you need to become more active. Church services incorporate activities that require physical activity such as swaying as you sing, raising your hands in worship, and standing up during prayers. When you combine these activities with some stretches and balance exercises at home, you’ll be less likely to fall and be able to live in your home for longer.

Promotes healthy behaviors

On average, churchgoers drink less, smoke less, are less likely to be involved in sexually promiscuous behaviors and use of recreational drugs. Furthermore, some churches prohibit the use of drugs and alcohol among their congregants. Christian faith promotes a positive outlook on life and illnesses which result in improved health and coping capability among the sick and disabled.

Promotes longevity

Many studies indicate that people who believe in a higher power live longer than those who do not. This longevity can be attributed to less stress that comes from knowing there is a higher being helping you out and guiding you in life, as well as the healthier lifestyle advocated for in many churches.

Despite your best intentions to attend church every Sunday, some days you may be unable to for one reason or another. In such a case, do not entirely exclude yourself from the meaningful benefits of attending church. Consider live streaming or tuning in to a service being aired on television or online.

Protagonists

I attended the Live the Universe and Everything symposium. These are notes from one of the panels. Any misinformation is the fault of the note taker.

  • You need to learn about all the types of protagonists before you choose which one you want to use in your manuscript.
  • What is a protagonist?
  • It is your hero, a boy or girl or team. It is the main character of your story. If you’re doing a team each member needs to be distinct and well developed. Each needs to have a loss to gain and have the most to lose.
  • The protagonist is the one who moves the story forward. The main character everything revolves around them. They are the most important to the story.
  • Usually the protagonist and the main character of the same person.
  • The protagonist is the person that must accomplish the goal.
  • Many feel that in fact, this is the one that drives the story question. What are the defining traits between protagonists and antagonists? Traditionally the antagonist is often the person who is preventing the protagonist from achieving their goal.
  • How taking the reader-centered on the goals of the protagonist?
  • How do you keep the protagonist as the number one character?
  • Have the protagonists have various traits that many people can relate to. The reader needs to step into the shoes of the protagonists and like them. If you have them blank characters and to easy-going, they might be boring.
  • Like to give characters layers like an onion on all core. One way to give the protagonist death is a say one thing but they may be thinking another. For example, they might be challenged to a duel, so they boast that the person challenging them does not have a chance. but in their mind the word of they’ll be being up and lose it lose a position.
  • Zero from the game Hades is a blank slate and is an intriguing character.
  • We put out characters in interesting and dangerous situations that they have to get out of.
  • Give your character’s laws. Broken characters are getting more popular. Such as Batman.
  • You also need something that makes the character likable. If a best friend is supporting a character that seems unlikable, let the reader see why the sidekick character supports them.

Light of Christ

These are notes from church. Any misinformation is the fault of the note taker.

  • The Holy Ghost is always there to provide guidance.
  • When we choose righteousness, we follow Christ.
  • The gift of choice is we feel the pain of our mistakes but the Savior’s there to help us.
  • If we stray we can choose the path of Christ again. Each time we stray we choose Christ’s path again.
  • We get to choose: the blessings that follow with a choice we are given the choice before mortal earth, we attended the great Council choosing what path would follow.
  • As humans, we often take the path of least resistance. Doctrine covenants 13 is a law in heaven on which all blessings are predicated. The blessings of God are tied to blessings from our heavenly father.
  • There’s a story of a man that was the branch president of a very small branch. In another country. He was told by his employer that you need to work on Sunday. He said he couldn’t. The employers said in a work on Sunday or you can’t work here. After long thought, he no longer works for that company. The missionaries had not been in that area of the country for a long time. But the missionary story went around neighborhoods asking if they knew the LDS members. This missionary showed up at the bank branch president’s house. You need to them that he was now unemployed is he would work on Sundays. The elders Lachine command no within two days he was high to work for the church.
  • Elder door was asked at the conference what is the greatest thing you’ve learned as a member of the 12 apostles? He answered the miraculous timing of the Lord repairing everything we need.
  • King Benjamin said you should do what the Lord commands and if you do he will immediately bless you.
  • We don’t tell the blessings immediately.
  • Told a story of her brother making choices that were not encouraged by her parents and other family members. Her brother did not go on a mission. Do not follow the same path. After years of trying to encourage him to do what they thought was right, they change of tactics and simply told him they loved him. Years later he did you to go on a mission. And while he was on his mission he became district leader. And is a source of good advice and counsel to the missionaries who are struggling. His counsel is some experience of his own troubled past
  • There was another story of where there was a wayward son. And after years he was given a testimony that he knew the church is true. The family was struggling and trying to sell their farm for years. As a son was sharing his testimony the mother’s phone rang. She stopped at 30. Again during the testimony, the phone rang to shut it off a third time the phone rang she went outside to build the room to find out who was calling. The precise time that the son said I know the church is true was when they sold their farm.
