The full title is: The greater audiobook bakeoff; ingredients and methods to bake up a great audiobook. This is a presentation offered at the 2023 LDSPMA writers’ conference. The presenter is Nancy Peterson. Any misinformation is the fault of the note-taker.

 

  • Audiobooks is another source of income
  • It takes 6 hrs. of labor to produce one hour of text
  • Give our reader a finished professionally prepared manuscript (Pre-edited)
  • Read your manuscript aloud and you will catch a lot.
  • Help your reader: names provide tern and character pronouncing.
  • Tell the reader, if you compare a character in your book to a TV character, or give traits.
  • If characters are repeated in future books, let the reader know.

 

Cover art:

  • There is a different format for audiobooks. Copies from the CD era. The cover is square.
  • If stretch the picture, it makes it unattractive.
  • One author copied the edges to extend the cover so it met the format CD-looking cover.

 

Disturbing platform/contract

  • There are about six distributors
  • Acx: is owned by amazon. Audible. They will give you 20%
  • Listen to audiobooks in our desired genera and see how ours fit

 

Terms

  • right holder > author of the book.
  • The producer is the person reading the book.
  • Reader applicants will audition to read your book about two pgs.
  • Need to hire someone you trust.
  • RS: is where the reader and author share profit. Can’t use readers outside of the book.
  • Pay contract; about $100 to $150 an hour. Exclusive contract.
  • PFH: per finished hour. Can or not be exclusive.
  • The finished product is about $250 PFH (all exclusive)
  • Tell the reader what you feel is important in your book.
  • Read your book out to yourself. You will catch stuff you missed.

 

Market your audiobook

  • Codes: make the most of them. Don’t give away to fly members.
  • Free audiobookcodes.com
  • Social medial
  • Used for AudioFile magazine review request
  • Live recording on discord or tiktok.
  • Put samples on YouTube (available only if you have a non-exclusive contract.)
  • Podcasts are always looking for guest
