Here are some notes from a preparedness fair I attended. This presentation large scale disasters.
– The greatest loss is communication.
– Who care for ourselves stashed a good 72-hour kits, including some food and water and first aid.
– Damage report, how many people hurt. Other people not be prepared you need to get them help.
– Communication solutions: cell, CB radio
– Ham radio, walkie-talkie, social media. Email, text, runners, smoke signals, shouting? Whistle. Broadcast am/FM/short wave radio, print, satellite phone.
– Most reliable communication is two-way: cell phone when conditions are good. Rely on tower, system, location.
– Ham radio: most reliable. Requires a license (test) and some skill. Complete control of the entire system.
– Satellite phone. Good when the weather is good. Requires an extensive subscription. Must be line-of-sight with satellite.
– FRS radio (walkie-talkie. Advantages: don‘t require a license. Inexpensive, lightweight, easy to use: Disadvantages limited rage. 4 block. Unchangeable antenna, eat batteries fast. Frs: family radio service.
– Runners. Two-by-two. Run by foot, bike, cycle, etc. include a written message. Don’t rely upon memory. Can be slow.
