Tonight’s theme was inspired by a Facebook quote. I shared a message similar to the following: ‘Four quarters is better type of friendship than a 100 pennies’. When it comes to good friends it is better to have four quarters than a hundred pennies. I hope today’s lesson can be of use to youth ministries, family devotionals and family home evenings.
Let’s take a moment and consider what a 25c friend would be compared to a penny friend. A quarter is a higher currency because of more metal in the coin. More metal could mean a friend who is willing to go the extra mile. For me, a true friend is someone who will tell me the truth even if it is painful. It would be someone I would feel comfortable in calling up in an emergency.
They would be a person who has shown me worth the investment of their time and vicsa versa. Common values or intent can be shared. If two close friends have a difference opinion on a topic, than the friendship concentrates upon things we share in common.
A penny may be someone for a fun conversation but a true relationship has not been developed yet. Pennies may have a future capability of becoming quarts by both sides of the friendship treating someone like they would want to be treated.
Discuss with the class or family what a quarter could purchase to a penny. Maybe for young family members discuss what might be required to earn a quarter over what is needed to earn a penny? The investment of effort and time would be more because the currency is worth more. So the same can be said of friendships.
If you have a way on how this object lesson could be applied in another way, please feel free to share it in the comment section of this blog. Thanks
